Clio and the Contemporary welcomes pitches from contributors looking to mark historically significant anniversaries or to draw attention to forgotten events.
In 2026, we remember 1976, 1926, 1876, 1826, 1776 in particular, but we are open to others.
The contemporary resonance of historical events can by marked in a variety of ways, such as:
- analysis of lasting impact
- comparison/contrast to a more recent event(s)
- unexpected throughlines across time
- innovative lesson plans or syllabi
- a fresh perspective on a familiar moment in the past
Submissions can range from 800-4000 words. Authors are encouraged to embed hyperlinks, images, and videos.
When possible, we aim to publish anniversary pieces on or around the precise day to provide context and analysis from historians alongside timely buzz generated in media outlets. Readers continue to find them well after they are published through Google searches and hyperlinks from other sites. Check out What the Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald Can Teach Us Fifty Years Later and The “Thrilla in Manila” at 50: A Retrospective on Muhammad Ali, Joe Frazier, and the Power of Their “Calculated Blaze” for recent examples.
