This course traces the history of the United States during the 1990s. It pays particular attention to the politics of the era, as well as the cultural texts (songs, films, and other phenomena) that both reflected and shaped the period.

It pays particular attention to the historical developments that have shaped students’ lives—the global “war on terror,” widening income and wealth inequality, the explosion of the Internet and social media, and intensifying battles over immigration and national and cultural identity.

The history of "This Land Is Your Land," from the many versions of the song to the even more varied responses to it, raise important questions about what a national anthem is—and what it might do in the discordant politics and culture of the United States.
