Julia B. Haager is a Visiting Assistant Professor of US and Public History at the College of Charleston. Her research explores how members of the eugenics movement shaped sex education in US public schools during the first five decades of the twentieth century. A portion of her dissertation, “Teaching Responsible Reproduction,” has appeared in the Journal of the Gilded Age and Progressive Era and she is currently preparing a book manuscript based on that project. She serves as managing editor of the “Surviving Grad School” and “Public History” series on Clio and the Contemporary and worked previously as managing editor of the Journal of Women’s History. Her second book project, co-authored with Sean G. Massey, explores AIDs service organizations and public health work in NYC and is based on more than fifty oral history interviews conducted with leaders, staff, and volunteers from the Gay Men’s Health Crisis center during AIDs epidemic in the 1980s and early 1990s. Her work has been funded by an American Dissertation Fellowship from the American Association of University Women (AAUW) and a Public Humanities Fellowship from Humanities NY (sponsored by the Andrew Mellon Foundation) and the Institute for Advanced Studies in the Humanities at Binghamton University. Julia earned a BA in History from Seattle Pacific University, an MA in Educational Foundations from California State University, Los Angeles, and an MA in History from Binghamton University. Her teaching interests include: public history; modern US history; women, gender, and sexualities; race, ethnicity, and immigration; history of education and critical pedagogy; gender and politics; prostitution and human trafficking; and gender and empire.
